Let's be honest

I found this litte user manual at Merle Becker's website, copied and adapted it to me. I don't expect you to read all of it but if you fancy a conversation starter – go ahead!

My mission statement
  • I support you to the best of my ability and your potential to create sustainable solutions for the future through hands-on work, facilitation, moderation and communication. By thinking of the ones that actually use your service and bringing people together in- and outside your team I tear down walls and build bridges towards a better and more sustainable future.
Some honest, unfiltered things about me
  • A purpose is very important to me (Hello, Generation Y!) – I need to identify myself with the task at hand and couldn’t just do it for the sake of the job.
  • I am a generalist: I absorb new information and connect it with existing data to connect the dots and see the bigger picture.
  • I will take a look at what you are doing from time to time. Not only because I am a very curious person but also to check if there are synergy possibilities.
  • I love it when an insight comes to life, when someone else has that moment of epiphany.
  • I do not believe in a 8 h/day and 5 days/week-work schedule when it comes to knowledge work or creative work. For me it is often way more effective to work for a shorter time or to put the pen down, finish the day early and start again with a fresh and rested mind. That can also apply to thinking about certain topics outside of traditional working hours.
  • I most enjoy working at pace with lots going on. Conversely, I lose energy in long-turnaround times/extended deadlines where there is no sense of urgency.
  • I love to question the status quo and I get energy from thinking about how we could do things differently. This can make me seem to avoid doing the most obvious task but mostly I think about how to take the most energy-efficient and smart way.
  • Others might think of me of being overly grumpy and negative but sometimes I just need to blow off some steam to continue creating value.
My strengths
  • I am a generalist with a lot of knowledge from different disciplines that I love to connect to get a bigger picture. I certainly don’t mind taking responsibility for promoting new approaches.
  • We are in a people’s business and I like to work with people. I love to communicate empathically with a focus on inclusion: My strength lies in building better communications with others.
  • Whenever a storm rises in a project I provide calmness and structure.
  • A presentation slide is missing, the client comes in with last-minute change requests or anything else isn't going the way it's supposed to be? No problem, I will react flexible to whatever the situation needs.
  • Ever since my first career steps I built up a comprehensive network of experts. For almost any task I have someone I can turn to if need be. Get on board!
  • I am always full of ideas for a better future, better events and projects. I thrive in situations where I can advocate an entirely new approach. Feel free to always contact me for a brainstorming or sparring session.
  • Once I am on fire for something I will use all of my energy to make it awesome.
I’m at my best
  • Even if I am with you as a contractor please include me in your team as much as you can.
  • Same for meetings, I like to be in and contribute to them.
  • I like some flexibility in work hours.
  • Give (me) feedback. Freelancers rarely get any proper feedback unless it's negative. I value constructive comments on what I do and who I am.
  • I don’t like completely quiet environments at my work place. That white noise of colleagues working motivates me.
  • I know that work environments have not been invented to make friends in the first place and that's okay – but I would like us to get to know each other, have a laugh and connect not only on a professional level. We spend so much time together – it's worth a try, don't you think?
Things that drive me nuts
  • Racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia...
  • People that are not taking me seriously.
  • Hyperbolical self-promoters.
  • Overlong discussions and analyses that drift away from the topic of the meeting. I focus on solutions and actions.
  • Blaming others, letting the shit flow downstream.
  • Focusing on the quantity of work (hours) instead of quality.
My quirks
  • A colleague once told me that I have a “healthy sarcasm”.
  • I communicate openly about the state of my mental health (depression, anxiety issues) and when I (rarely) need some time off to prioritise it.
  • I get hangry and will never understand people that just forget or neglect to eat.
  • I try to avoid phone calls with strangers or when I know that the recipient is in a stressful situation (e.g. calling a doctor’s office).
  • I am an ambivert. I can be all by myself just fine (and need that time to recharge my social batteries) and watch TV series or play computer games but I also thrive when you put me on a stage.
  • The imposter syndrome is strong in me. I worry about other people’s opinions about me (as a person) and my work performance constantly.
How I like to communicate
  • I am not perfect and I assume that neither are you. Let’s make the best of it and communicate on eye-level.
  • I don’t like being kept in the dark or facing uncertainties, even if it's bad news. Please let me know if something is up or in the way, I will understand and appreciate it.
  • Please don't ghost me. I will try to do the same.
  • We can have a proper argument about issues at work as long as it is professional and we are honest with each other. Let’s get into the ring, settle the dispute and have a drink at the end of the day.
  • I want to be heard and I want you to be heard and feel included in the discussion. No matter if you are the CEO or an intern.
  • Throw your communication tool (good: Slack, bad: Microsoft Teams) on me and I will join both professional and private conversations using all the (custom) emojis. I will also reply as soon as I can.
  • Video conferencing tools: Any tool is welcome, except Microsoft Teams.
Some fun facts
  • I love football (and take it seriously) but suck at playing it.
  • I can get very nerdy about things like specialty coffee or trains and talk about it for hours.
  • My favourite (vacation) location is any place in Scandinavia.
  • I have a cuddly pony called ‘Pony’.
  • I have been on TV several times, from vox pops to little acting scenes.
  • My collection of football kits is extensive and I create some on my own.
  • I had a green belt in Karate when I was a kid.
  • I have never been skiing or snowboarding.
