Let's be honest

I found this little user manual on Merle Becker's website, copied and adapted it for me. I don't expect you to read all of it, but if you fancy a conversation starter – go ahead!
‍

My mission statement
  • I support you to the best of my ability and your potential to create sustainable solutions for the future through hands-on work, facilitation, moderation and communication. By thinking about the people who actually use your service and by bringing people together within and outside your team, I tear down walls and build bridges towards a better and more sustainable future.
Some honest, unfiltered things about me
  • A purpose is very important to me (Hello, Generation Y!) – I need to identify with the task at hand and couldn’t just do it for the sake of the job.
  • I am a generalist: I absorb new information and connect it with existing data to connect the dots and see the bigger picture.
  • I will take a look at what you are doing from time to time. Not only because I am a very curious person but also to check for potential synergies.
  • I love it when an insight comes to life and when someone else has that moment of epiphany.
  • I do not believe in an 8-hour, 5-day working week for knowledge or creative work. For me, it is often much more effective to work for a shorter time or to put the pen down, finish the day early, and start again with a fresh, rested mind. That can also apply to thinking about certain topics outside traditional working hours.
  • I most enjoy working at a pace with a lot going on. Conversely, I lose energy in long turnaround times/extended deadlines where there is no sense of urgency.
  • I love to question the status quo, and I gain energy from thinking about how we could do things differently. This can make me seem to avoid the most obvious task, but mostly I think about how to take the most energy-efficient and smart approach.
  • Others might think of me as overly grumpy and negative, but sometimes I just need to blow off some steam to continue creating value. It's nothing personal.
My strengths
  • I am a generalist with a broad knowledge base across different disciplines that I love to connect to gain a broader picture. I certainly don’t mind taking responsibility for promoting new approaches.
  • We are in a people’s business, and I like to work with people. I love to communicate empathetically, with a focus on inclusion: my strength lies in building better communication with others.
  • Whenever a storm arises in a project, I provide calm and structure.
  • A presentation slide is missing, the client comes in with last-minute change requests, or anything else isn't going the way it's supposed to. No problem, I will be flexible and react to whatever the situation needs.
  • Ever since my first career steps, I have built up a comprehensive network of experts. For almost any task, I have someone I can turn to if need be. Get on board!
  • I am always full of ideas for a better future and for better events and projects. I thrive in situations where I can advocate an entirely new approach. Feel free to contact me for a brainstorming or sparring session.
  • Once I am on fire about something, I will use all my energy to make it awesome.
I’m at my best
  • Even if I am with you as a contractor, please include me on your team as much as possible.
  • Same for meetings. I like to be in and contribute to them.
  • I prefer some flexibility in working hours.
  • Give (me) feedback. Freelancers rarely receive any meaningful feedback unless it's negative. I value constructive comments on what I do and who I am.
  • I don’t like completely quiet environments at my workplace. The white noise of colleagues working motivates me.
  • I know that work environments are not designed to make friends in the first place, and that's okay – but I would like us to get to know each other, have a laugh, and connect not only on a professional level. We spend so much time together – it's worth a try, don't you think?
Things that drive me nuts
  • Racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia...
  • People who are not taking me seriously (or who give me the impression that they do).
  • Hyperbolical self-promoters.
  • Overlong discussions and analyses that drift away from the meeting's topic. I focus on solutions and actions.
  • Blaming others, letting the shit flow downstream.
  • Focusing on the quantity of work (hours) rather than quality.
My quirks
  • A colleague once told me I have a “healthy sarcasm”.
  • I communicate openly about the state of my mental health (depression and anxiety) and when I (rarely) need some time off to prioritise it.
  • I get hangry and will never understand people who just forget or neglect to eat.
  • I try to avoid phone calls with strangers or with anyone I know is in a stressful situation (e.g. calling a doctor’s office).
  • I am an ambivert. I can be on my own just fine (and need that time to recharge my social batteries) and watch TV series or play computer games, but I also thrive when you put me on stage.
  • The imposter syndrome is strong in me. I constantly worry about other people’s opinions of me (as a person) and my work performance.
How I like to communicate
  • I am not perfect, and I assume neither are you. Let’s make the best of it and communicate on an equal footing.
  • I don’t like being kept in the dark or facing uncertainty, even if it's bad news. Please let me know if something is up or in the way. I will understand and appreciate it.
  • Please don't ghost me. I will try to do the same.
  • We can have a proper argument about issues at work as long as it is professional and we are honest with each other. Let’s get into the ring, settle the dispute, and have a drink at the end of the day.
  • I want to be heard, and I want you to be heard and feel included in the discussion, no matter whether you are the CEO or an intern.
  • Send me your communication tool (good: Slack, bad: Microsoft Teams), and I will join both professional and private conversations, using all the (custom) emojis. I will also reply as soon as I can.
  • Video conferencing tools: Any tool is welcome, except Microsoft Teams (see above).
Some fun facts
  • I love football (and take it seriously), but I suck at playing it.
  • I can get very nerdy about things like speciality coffee or public transport and talk about them for hours.
  • My favourite (holiday) location is anywhere in Scandinavia.
  • I have a cuddly pony called ‘Pony’.
  • I have appeared on TV several times, from vox pops to small acting roles.
  • My collection of football kits is extensive, and I create some of them myself.
  • I had a green belt in Karate as a kid.
  • I have never skied or snowboarded.
  • Despite being German, I hate asparagus.
